Just got this reminiscence from Nan Eckfield ’56:
The October ScopeMonthly article on Skidmore’s volleyball coach reminded me of a funny story I hadn’t thought of in years.
When I was a student, I signed up for softball for PE. I’ve always been very ball-shy (I even blink playing ping-pong) and hoped this would help me to get over it. At the first class, the instructor had us all toss the ball around and bat a little. After a few minutes, he pointed to three of us and said, “You three go over there and practice catching with each other.” The rest of the class formed up two teams and played a game. Each class day thereafter, “you three” automatically went to our spot off to the side and played catch while the rest of the class played a game against other classes.
Imagine my shock at the end-of-semester awards ceremony when my name was called and I received a letter in softball. It seems that no one had taken “you three” off the team roster, and we all received letters without ever playing a game, in practice or in competition. Somehow I don’t think that could happen today!
This has been one of my favorite Skidmore memories.
